Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa

Since 1961, the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa has provided area youth and adults with outstanding educational opportunities. Their longest-running program, Artists-in-the-Schools, began in 1963 and today reaches more than 120,000 youth from mostly at-risk and underserved communities each year.

Artistic self-expression is essential to the overall health and well-being of all citizens. The Council brings professional residencies in the literary, visual, and performing arts to a wide array of diverse community citizens. Artists-in-the-Schools: (AIS) K-12 teachers from seven area school districts request artists to conduct interactive workshops in their classroom. AIS connects professional artists in music, theatre, dance, storytelling, visual arts, creative writing, and cultural studies with classroom students. AIS is made available to the Greater Tulsa Area school systems and all teachers are invited to request this program for their classrooms.

Starting in the Fall of 2010, Portico dancers are participating in the AIS school program of the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa to bring “dance choreography” into schools at risk. The program as developed by Portico Dans Theatre focuses on:

  • Creative writing

  • Story telling

  • Working in a collaborative group

  • Dance Choreography

This presentation involves positive movements through individual ideas from students in a group setting. Students will learn how to form their own creative thoughts and how to communicate those thoughts through movement. Students have the opportunity to watch their ideas and movements come to life. This presentation is about fun learning, building character and self- confidence. The main goal is to show students there is no wrong answer in the creative world of dance.

Living Arts of Tulsa

Since its inception, Portico has been actively involved in supporting programs and events held through Living Arts of Tulsa. All time for producing, creating and dancing is contributed by the company to Living Arts.

Since 1969, Living Arts of Tulsa has been steadfast in its mission of "presenting and developing contemporary art forms in Tulsa".  Living Arts’ focus is on newly evolving ideas and concepts, in the creation of art forms, and exploring the relationship of art to other disciplines and fields of knowledge. Through the presentation of creative workshops, performances, exhibitions, films/videos, demonstrations of current art, lectures, related educational activities and research, Living Arts shares its interests with the community. Portico is proud to have contributed to this mission in continuing to collaborate through the following pieces during the year:

·         Collaboration with spoken word artists

·         Improvisation: Collaboration with all artists of Living Arts

·         Collaboration with performance art artists

·         New Genre: Collaboration with dance artists
